Karnivool is a five-piece alternative rock/progressive metal music group from Perth, Western Australia formed in 1997. Mainstays are Andrew 'Drew' Goddard on lead guitar and Ian Kenny on lead vocals, who also sings in the band Birds of Tokyo.

 

Early years (1997-2003)

 

Karnivool developed from a high school band formed in 1997 in Perth, Western Australia, which played parties using a set of covers of Nirvana and Carcass with some original songs mixed in as well. By 1998, lead singer Ian Kenny changed their set to entirely original songs, removed all early members and officially named the band Karnivool, derived from an anecdotal description that the original members were "a bunch of clowns" around Perth.

 

Between 1998 and 2004, the band would go through a number of line-up changes over the years. The 1998 incarnation of Karnivool consisted of Kenny on lead vocals, Andrew 'Drew' Goddard on lead guitar, Andrew Brown on bass guitar and Brett McKenzie on drums. In 2000, Brown was replaced by Jon Stockman. Shortly after, McKenzie also left and Ray Hawking joined on drums. Mark Hosking joined as a second guitar player in 2003 and in late 2004 Steve Judd on drums replaced Hawking. This would result as the band's current line-up of Kenny, Goddard, Hosking, Stockman and Judd.

 

 

In 1999 the band released its debut self-titled EP, Karnivool. This consisted of 4 tracks, named "Fool Me", "Konkrete Seed", "Box" and "Some More of the Same". This album did not get a lot of recognition, with many stores and archives listing their second EP, Persona, released in March 2001 as their first record. Persona consisted of four new tracks and a rerelease of the song"Some More of the Same" from the first EP.

 

 

After releasing "Persona", they won the Western Australian State Final of the National Campus Band Competition, and they competed in the National Finals held in Hobart, Tasmania. In October, the band were chosen to support the Rollins Band, but due to the Ansett collapse, Henry Rollins and his band were forced to cancel their Perth show. At the end of 2001 the band did end up playing a support concert for Fear Factory though.

 

Themata (2004-2007)

 

Goddard wrote the tracks for Themata, their first album, and he stated that Karnivool played songs from Themata together as a band only after it was recorded.[3] Goddard not only wrote the tracks and played guitar, but also played drums on every track except "Lifelike", as Steve Judd had not yet joined the band.[4] Themata was released independently on 7 February 2005, and was distributed via MGM Distribution. On 23 August 2006, Karnivool signed a licensing deal with indie label Bieler Bros. Records. The album was issued in the US on 10 April 2007 and in the UK on 7 May. The band also re-released the Persona EP 12 December, following the success of Themata.

 

Karnivool toured on the Homeland Security Tour shortly after the release of Themata. In late 2007, they took part in the Great American Rampage Tour in North America.

 

During this timeframe, Karnivool also contributed a cover of Gotye's song "The Only Way" to the album Mixed Blood, which contains covers and remixes of songs from Gotye's Boardface and Like Drawing Blood. The song was not released on any Karnivool released albums. Also, while not Karnivool music, members Goddard and Stockman played guitar and bass respectively on the title track of Perth/London group Pendulum's 2005 album Hold Your Colour.

 

 

Sound Awake (2008-present)

 

After returning from touring in the US, Karnivool returned to Australia in 2008. They entered the studio to write their follow-up to Themata. Goddard stated the new album, Sound Awake, would be a huge step up from Themata, while Stockman stated that the writing process of the new record had been more of a collaborative group effort by the band than previous works, and that they were going into the studio with a new recording strategy: trying to focus less on minute details, and put together a more natural sounding album.

 

 

The band continued to tour Australia as well, including the Big Day Out tour, Pyramid Rock Festival, Southbound, and Homebake. During their live performances in the Aeons Tour, they played some of the new songs from the album, such as "Goliath", "Deadman", "Pearogram" (All I Know), and "New Day". At Homebake in 2008, they debuted a fifth new song entitled "Set Fire to the Hive", which was confirmed as the first single from the album. The new songs were considered more mature, while still bearing resemblance to the band's previous work.

 

 

On the 26 April 2009, the video for , "Set Fire to the Hive" was released,and on 9 May and peaked at #11 on the AIR Top 20 singles charts. The album was released on 5 June 2009. It debuted at #2 on the ARIA Album Charts. and #1 on the AIR Charts. The album received Gold certification for sales in Australia and in October.

 

The band toured nationally around Australia in support of Sound Awake. The band played in New Zealand and then the U.S. to headline "Third Eye Gathering" in Los Angeles. From there, the band toured the UK, in September and October.

 

On the 9 November 2009, Karnivool released a music video on YouTube for their second single, "All I Know".

 

Sound Awake was released by Sony Music Independent Network/RED. in the United States and Canada on February 16, 2010. Karnivool followed the release with a co-headlining tour with Fair to Midland in the U.S.

 

 

After a successful tour of Europe and the United States, Karnivool returned to home soil and announced another national tour, the New Day Tour. Two Melbourne shows and a Sydney show quickly sold out, unprecedented in Karnivool's history and as a result further shows at capitals such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth were announced. The band took a break from touring so that Kenny could tour with his other band, Birds of Tokyo, but the band plans on resuming touring by December 2010.

 

 

Sometime after returning to Australia in September, the band is planning on starting to write material for a third album.

Angus & Julia Stone are a brother-sister duo from Newport on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. Their mother and father were both musical - they learned many songs from their father's cover band. At very young ages, they were introduced to music by their father who made them join his school band. Julia played the trumpet, Angus the trombone and their older sister, Catherine, the saxophone.

 

 

Their debut EP Chocolates and Cigarettes was released August 2006. Their second EP Heart Full of Wine was released in February 2007. Both EP's were released through EMI Music in Australia and independent label, Independiente Records in the UK.

 

 

Their debut album A Book Like This was released on the 8th September 2007 through EMI Music Australia and sold platinum (70,000) and March 2008 in UK/Europe through Flock Music. It was later released in the USA through Nettwerk on the 3rd March 2009 with an alternative track listing. The album has also been released in Japan (Village Again) and Korea (Leaplay Music).

The sophomore self-produced album "Down the Way" saw a simultaneous, worldwide release in March, 2010. As travelling has been an integral part of the Stones' musical story, they opted to record in a number of diverse locations around the globe - an old sawmill on the river banks of Fowey, Cornwall, a studio in Brooklyn, a water tank in Coolangatta, their second home (London), and in Queens, New York.

 

 

The album debuted at number 1 in their native country, reaching platinum status and becoming the highest-selling album by an Australian artist in 2010 in just 2 months. The album also hit number 4 on iTunes France after the duo performed it on the TV show Taratata. They have completed their first worldwide tour with all dates selling out and, for the remainder of 2010, the siblings will be travelling around the world for festivals and their second worldwide tour. The duo won ARIA Album of the Year and ARIA Single of the Year at the 2010 Australian Record Industry Awards.

Angus and Julia began to collaborate on their musical endeavours in early 2006. Prior to that, both performed as solo artists, principally at open mike nights, but with each using the other as a backing partner. They first performed together at the Coogee Bay hotel in Sydney in 2005 with Angus performing and Julia singing back-up. In terms of composing material, they write on their own, then work together on structure and harmonies.

 

Both Angus and Julia have distinctive vocal styles. The Sydney Morning Herald's Bernard Zuel described their vocals as such: "Her voice has a fractured feel like Jolie Holland; his has a smoke-on-the-beach drawl." UK journalist Johnny Sharp stated, "Most impressive, though, are the songs - simple but blindingly effective acoustic compositions, warm boy-girl harmonies and delicate, less-is-more arrangements. Resistance is surely futile."

 

 

 

 

Angus and Julia began recording their first EP Chocolates and Cigarettes in March 2006. It was officially released August 26, 2006. Their first single "Paper Aeroplane" was played on Australian radio in April. That same month Angus and Julia played at The Great Escape Festival in Sydney, Australia.

 

At the end of July 2006, The Stones played to two hundred people packed in a tiny tent at the Splendour in the Grass festival in Byron Bay, Australia. By August they had signed a two-EP deal with EMI Music in Australia and independent label Independiente Records in the UK and had packed their bags and headed for London to tour.

 

Whilst in the UK, they were invited into Chris Potter's studio (The Verve/Richard Ashcroft) to record. Fran Healy from UK band Travis had also just heard their debut EP and also invited them to his house to record. The result of these two matchups was the duo's second EP, Heart Full of Wine.

 

During their time together, Healy also helped the brother and sister with material which would later become a part of their debut album A Book Like This. With a producer to guide them, Angus & Julia sat on Fran's lounge-room floor, continuing to record songs, using vintage guitars and microphones. The rest of the songs from the album would be recorded in their mother’s lounge room back in Newport with producer and friend, Ian Pritchett.

 

At the end of 2006, A+J signed a worldwide publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Creative Artist Agency came on board as their UK agent.

 

2007 commenced with Angus and Julia at home in Australia playing at the Big Day Out Festival. Their single "Paper Aeroplane" reached No. 43 on Triple J Hottest 100 and the duo signed an album deal with EMI Music Australia.

 

In February they played their first national Australian tour which completely sold out. In February Chocolates and Cigarettes and Heart Full of Wine were double packed and released in Australia and the UK. The double EP rocketed to No. 12 on the iTunes UK and their single "Private Lawns" was single of the week on BBC Radio 2. To date the double EP has sold over 35,000 copies in Australia.

 

 

 

 

In late March 2007 the Stones' supported Donavon Frankenreiter in UK and Holland and the William Morris Agency signed up as their US agent. In May 2007 they played at The Great Escape Festival Brighton. The Evening Standard said "potentially chart-bound tracks were in far greater supply when Angus and Julia Stone took to the stage".

 

Angus and Julia released their debut album A Book Like This in Australia on 8 September 2007. The album debuted at #6 and has since reached Platinum sales in Australia.

 

In October 2007, Natalie Portman personally picked their song "The Beast" to be included in a charity compilation album Big Change: Songs for FINCA. All proceeds from the album went to FINCA International. Natalie Portman has been working with the charity since 2003 as an "Ambassador of Hope". FINCA is a financial support company that offers its services and capital to the world's lowest-income business hopefuls.

 

 

The Stones spent the rest of 2007 dividing their time between Australia and the UK. They toured nationwide around Australia and gigged extensively in the UK, Ireland and Scotland including support slots with The Magic Numbers and a winning display at The Latitude Festival.

 

They welcomed in 2008 performing at the Falls Festival, VIC, Australia before heading back to the UK to support Newton Faulkner and David Gray as well as playing their own sold-out London shows at the Scala. Two of their songs again make Triple J Hottest 100 with "Wasted" coming in at #31 and "The Beast" at #45.

 

A Book Like This was released in the UK March 2008. The UK press love The Stones; Uncut magazine said "Fragile, beautiful songs", The Guardian said "Angus and Julia Stone fill my heart to bursting point with joy".

 

The second half of 2008 was filled with more touring including a support spot with Martha Wainwright across the UK and Europe playing to over 25,000 people.

 

 

In March 2009, A Book Like This was released in the USA. The brother and sister supported Brett Dennen around the US and also performed on the KCRW stage at SXSW as well as playing their own US shows being represented by William Morris Agency.

 

In April 2009, Angus released a solo album, Smoking Gun, under the name Lady of the Sunshine.[2]

 

Angus and Julia Stone spent most of 2009 writing, recording and self-producing Down the Way. The album was mixed by Kieran Kelly at The Buddy Project in Astoria Queens, NY.

 

On November 18, 2009, Angus and Julia appeared on triple j's Dools show with Scott Dooley and premiered the single "And the Boys". They stated their forthcoming album would be called Down the Way and it would be released in March 2010 with a coinciding Australian tour.[3] After six months apart (Angus back in Australia, Julia in New York), they recorded the album in studios in Cornwall England, Brooklyn in New York and Coolangatta in Queensland, Australia. About the new album, Angus stated: "All the songs were written so far [apart] that the styles and moods are really different." The album debuted at Number 1 on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) album chart.

 

The first single "And the Boys" became Angus & Julia Stone's second single to chart in the top 50 of the ARIA Charts. The first single to chart was "The Beast", which charted in September 2007. "Big Jet Plane" also recently peaked at #33 on the chart.

 

In May 2010, the "Big Jet Plane EP" was released that contained a cover version of "You're the One That I Want" from Grease. This has proved to be a cult hit with fans.

 

 

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Julia revealed she recorded a solo album in New York in late 2008. Her song "This Love" appears in the upcoming Australian film The Waiting City.[5] On July 29, Julia revealed the as-yet-untitled album was being mixed and printed with plans to sell it at shows in August, although label EMI had not yet confirmed this. She has described the album as mellow but darker and spookier in tone.[6] On August 24, she confirmed the album will be called The Memory Machine.[7]

h Mercy are a band from Melbourne, Victoria that formed in 2006.

 

Alexander Gow and Thomas Savage, the duo at the heart of Oh Mercy, blend evocative and intelligent lyricism with a strong pop sensibility on their debut album Privileged Woes, showcasing the depth of the young songwriters polished pop brilliance.

 

Following on from their successful debut EP ‘In The Nude For Love’, ‘Privileged Woes’ was recorded in the spare room, the size of a single bed, by Myles Wootton (The Panics) - the band literally had to put the mattress against the wall to record. The album was then mixed by Matt Voigt (Cat Power, The Dirty Three, Paul Kelly) and mastered by Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound, New York (TV on The Radio, The Strokes).

 

2009 saw Oh Mercy hand picked by Ben Folds to play the Sydney Opera House & chosen to tour with Little Birdy, Lisa Mitchell, Kaiser Chiefs and Ben Kweller. Oh Mercy headlined their national ‘Privileged Woes’ album launch tour, selling out shows all over Australia. They then played their last club shows for the year, co-headlining with The Veils before heading out to celebrate summer on the festival circuit including Meredith, Falls, Sunset Sounds, Southbound.

 

Already in 2010, Oh Mercy have played the Big Day Out and Laneway Festivals, travelled to America to play shows in LA, NY & SXSW and have just been announced on the UK’s Great Escape festival in May.

 

Privileged Woes features the current radio singles Seemed Like A Good Idea, Lay Everything On Me, Get You Back and Broken Ears.

 

Rolling Stone have described Oh Mercy as “…the freshest, smartest song-writing partnership since the Finn brothers”

Jonathan Boulet:

 

Jonathan Boulet ( pronounced: bull-lay) is an Australian folk-pop musician. Boulet wrote, recorded, produced and played almost every instrument in his small garage studio for his debut self-titled album.

 

Jonathan Boulet played at the Splendour in the Grass music festival in July 2010. He has also toured and performed with acts as diverse as Kate Nash, The Middle East, Tame Impala and Mumford and Sons. The weekly feature album on Australian youth radio station Triple J was Boulet's debut album in December 2009.

 

He is also a member of Sydney indie rock band Parades, in which he plays drums and contributes vocals; as well as power violence band Snakeface, in which he plays bass.

 

The phrase “jack of all, master of all” isn’t exactly one that gets bandied about, but is one that may well apply to the most recently inked player in the Modular clubhouse, Jonathan Boulet. A precociously inspired 21-year-old skate rat from Sydney’s northwest, Boulet makes a brand of ceremoniously uplifting, deeply colourful pop that sounds like something for which you’ve been searching but never thought you’d find.

 

Jonathan Boulet is the 20 year old Australian wunderkind whose music is both poignant and intelligent, but with a beauty so sincere it feels like a crime not to embrace. Boulet writes anthemic folk-pop born out of a world of endless campfires and tribal jam sessions.

Saw the telecast of The Jezabels (a 4 piece band out of Sydney) performing at the Triple J One Night Stand 2011 in Tumby Bay, S.A. on ABC 2 last night and thought they could be a worthy addition to your growing tomb of band info...

Apologies for the very long wait in between postings but have had some issues with my laptop and have only just got i back from HP

 

 

The Jezabels are a four-piece musical group from Sydney. They formed after meeting at the University of Sydney. Their music is hard to define into one specific genre, and has been described as a blend of indie pop, indie rock, rock, and disco pop.The Jezabels themselves, somewhat jocularly, describe their genre to be "intensindie". Band members-

 

Hayley Mary – vocals

Heather Shannon – piano/keyboard

Nik Kaloper – drums

Samuel Lockwood – rhythm guitar

 

The history:

Hayley Mary (vocals) and Heather Shannon (piano/keyboard) first began playing together in Byron Bay before moving to Sydney to attend university, where they met Nik Kaloper (drums) and Sam Lockwood (rhythm guitar), and formed the band.

 

 

 

They have so far released a trilogy of EP's: The Man Is Dead (2009), She's So Hard (2009), and Dark Storm (2010), (see Discography). They are currently in the process of writing a full length album, which should be due out sometime in the middle of 2011.

 

They have received a substantial amount of airplay, including on Sydney's FBi Radio and national youth broadcaster Triple J. On the 22nd December 2009, they were the Triple J Unearthed featured artist. They have also received airplay in the United States, where in August 2009, they debuted at #114 on the CMJ top 200 and reached #96 for the single Disco Biscuit Love.[10] Their She's So Hard EP was the #3 most added on US college radio.

 

 

"Disco Biscuit Love" was featured as the iTunes (Australia) single of the week in the first week of July, 2009. The single "Hurt Me" was featured as the iTunes (Australia) single of the week in the third week of February 2010, and was traxxRADIO's number 1 track of 2009.

 

The Jezabels had two songs featured in the Triple J Hottest 100, 2010. "Easy To Love" came in at number 49, and "Mace Spray" at number 16.

 

 

They were nominated for Best Breakthrough Artist and Best Single / EP at the 2010 Independent Music Awards.
