Duckzys Build Log

Recommended Posts

Well, after close to 8 years, the old X58 system is starting to show it's age, and is being retired. I was hoping to get a little more out of it, but currently being in a position that I can do a full system build, I thought there's no better time.

Currently, I've only ordered the non-perishables, in preparation for the main hardware.

Below is what is confirmed. Continue reading this thread, as I completely changed my mind on a full new system, and instead went second hand parts:

CPU: Intel i7-4770K (Delidded)

COOLER: Noctua NH-D15

MOBO: Asus Maximus VII Hero

RAM: 2 x G.SKILL TridentX F3-2400C10D-16GTX (32GB Total)

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Founder's Edition

SSD: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB

HDD Active: Toshiba MD04ACA400 4TB

HDD Archive: 4 * Western Digital Red WD80EFZX 8TB

SOUND: Asus Xonar Essence STX

PSU: Corsair RM850x

CASE: Fractal Design Define R5

Sounds good - no upgrade re monitor?

So does this mean that you are ditching the NAS (I thought you already had a NAS setup built, but I may have assumed you were doing this and perhaps it never happened)

I have the R5 - solid choice

I bought a new monitor only 2 months ago or so; Acer Predator XB271HUA

I've was wanting to do a NAS build for years (either an off the shelf NAS, or build one myself), but it just never happened. In the end, I just figured it'd be easier to put the drives in this build and call it a day. If I had a number of users wanting access to the stored content (read; Plex Library), then I might have gone down the NAS path.

I couldn't let the current eBay sales go by without picking something up.

Not that I was in a hurry, but overnight delivery is always nice.

So... a bit of a change of plans.

I came across a deal on some second hand parts that I couldn't resist, so I picked them up, and the $1500+ saved will be going towards a new car. It would have been nice to go all out on a build, but I'd rather put some of that money towards a car.

Intel i7-4770K

Asus Gryphon Z87

16GB (4x4GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz

I'll be selling the above RAM, because I got a good price on a 16GB kit of G.SKILL F3-2400C10D-16GTX that I'll be using in the build.

I'll also be sending the chip away to get delidded by a guy from OCAU forums that has been doing them for years. From all accounts, he does an excellent job.

The tool I use is the original Der8aurer DelidDieMate. Works brilliantly and never had a failure. Cost a good $180 shipped when it came out, then the cheaper alternatives arrived a few months after.

Paste is TG Conductanaut. I have use Coolaboratory Ultra before, but found it oxodised after about 6 months if not sealed, and the Conductanaut has treated me well.

I seal up using a Black Sikaflex product. Looks factory and I clean it all up so you cant even tell it's been done. And a lot easier to crack off later if you need to (you can do it basically with the Plastic Clamshell if you can work it under and wont damage the PCB.

The 4770's need the resistors for the VRM coated too, which I paint on some LET (liquid electrical tape) for protection.

I've also sent the 960 Pro drive back (luckily I didn't break the security seals and open it) and will be getting a full refund back on that. I'll probably grab a 850 Pro when they go on sale again.

I ended up selling the CableMod kit, because I didn't like the way they looked and the cables that come with the PSU are clean enough looking.

Seeing as I haven't gone all out on the build now, I'll be keeping my current GTX 1070, and won't be bothering with buying a 1080Ti.

I've got half a dozen SATA cables coming from AliExpress. My next purchase will be all the hard drives to plug them into, then the build is done.

Quick pic before I have to head to work. Bits arrived just before and I gave it a quick clean and put it together, ready for some testing to get some base line temperatures, before I get the chip delidded. Couldn't be bothered with the 2nd fan at the moment on the D15.

As I mentioned before, the RAM I'll most likely be replacing, and even though I'm happy with the board, I'm trying to source a Maximus VII Gene or Hero, and then sell this one.

Damn those Noctua coolers look like they should break motherboards so quickly... I just don't get how that much weight can hang off.

They look cool... but damn...

Basically what PK said. It's a fantastic mounting solution. Simple as.

Stress testing as we speak to get some temp readings. Happened to look down, and noticed that the D15 ever so slightly hangs over the top PCIE slot.

I've looked at a few other mATX boards, and it seems to be the standard layout, the top PCIE is much closer to the CPU socket then an ATX board. So even more reason for me to grab the ATX Maximus VII Hero that I am looking at.

I received my delidded chip back yesterday. Stressing right now.

After about 40 minutes of prime95, two cores have maxed out at 47C, where before delidding, they had maxed out at 55C. The other two cores are/were a couple of degrees below these max temps.

Very happy with the results.

One thing Id consider changing would be to swap that Samsung M2 drive back in. I use mine for my operating system and my favourite current games and I never see loading screens and system is up and running in way faster. Great bang for your buck.

I would if this generation that I'm upgrading to supports booting from NVMe drivers, but unfortunately, the boards that have M.2 slots, as far as I'm aware, only support storage drives in SATA mode, not bootable NVMe drives.
