TheDredd 61 Report post Posted July 15, 2016 Finally Vulkan is here. At least in DOOM for the moment, with early benches showing some sizeable boosts in frame rates. The results are somewhat lop-sided at the writing of this post, with AMD showing 20-40% gains in frame rates and Nvidia showing 10% at best (driver is on the way). These highlights for AMD are showing that it was not so much the cards being slow, but the massive CPU overhead needed to run GCN in DX11 and Open GL (poor architecture to API) In other words they knew they had a problem with DX11 / Open GL and did very little as far as effective driver improvement. My 290X has gone from 90-110FPS under Open GL to 120-140 FPS with Vulkan. Nvidia has very little in the way of improvement, the reply is driver is on the way. I am not sure how this will go but if they get anywhere near the AMD improvements it will be epic. 2 Go to top Share this post Link to post
MiniSanders 588 Report post Posted July 15, 2016 This is making the jump from NVidia to AMD looking more likely for me. Was hoping to upgrade to a much better card than my current 650Ti, and keep it under (around) $300. So now the upgrade to a RX 480 is looking very nice indeed. Will still wait and see what price the 1060 comes out at. 1 Go to top Share this post Link to post

With the 480 in the market the price will hopefully be sharp too, just remember no SLI on the 1060. Go to top Share this post Link to post
PistolKnight 554 Report post Posted July 16, 2016 I would wait and see what the driver performance is like in your next big planned title - eg Battlefield 1, AMD was horrendous in BF4 but that might have all improved but given the last experience might be prudent to wait to be any adverse experience. 1 Go to top Share this post Link to post
tricky 81 Report post Posted July 16, 2016 AMD was horrendous in BF4 They were? I never had a problem with my 280X getting 50~ on maxed.. DX12 still has once ace up its sleeve against Vulkan and that is MDA. http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/216880-ashes-of-the-singularity-demonstrates-nvidia-amd-gpus-working-side-by-side Go to top Share this post Link to post
