So I got hooked up today, did some before and after testing, thought some might find the results interesting, some might just hate me .Bit disappointed with some of the international speeds, I guess Internode have already shifted to TPG's crappy network. Really happy with the drop in latency though.

No.. Those speedtests are pretty average, latency plays important part when you want epeen speeds over long distances.

I would do unspeakable things for that ADSL alone. I'm on 1 Mb/second right now because its a peak time in town. I've seen 6 since the upgrade as the highest.

Hmm yeah results vary a lot, tried a few others, best server for me seemed to be the hugeserver networks, never pinged under 200ms to the US before.

When I scrolled and saw Mount I almost lost my shit. Then I saw on the next line that it was Mount Gravett. Really bummed with that. On another note I still have no phone and am running on broadband 2000 style. Also due to the workload and there only being 2 telstra techs in town. One of which is on holidays I can't get it fixed until mid November. The plus is that Internode are trying to offer me some sort of mobile broadband/phone or something in the meantime. It's just hard to reach someone when they are 2kms underground. Apparently Telstra has no coverage down there. 

 

Edit: Read that site at the bottom and it's expected that FTTN may be commenced in early 2017. So by 2018/19 we may have 2006 internet. Yay. Though it'll be interesting how they run the cable as the entire town is on a RIM, pair gains system. Meaning we only have a single copper wire. Not the 2 that ADSL 2 needs let alone the 2 Pairs which is the standard for most places. With the cost of replacing every cable in town you'd think that FTTP would make sense. Hopefully they'll offer a cheap Fibre option.

So my area just went live with the (FTTN) NBN!

 

Signed up last week and somehow the order went through as a "Professional install" even though Self Installation is listed on the order. That means a tech was scheduled to come out and install my modem... worst part is that it delays everything. Need to wait for the tech (8th) before they'll cut me over (14th).

 

Just spent 15 minutes yelling at Anuj from Telstra because they can't just change the order to self install and bring the date forward (from the 14th) to the 5th!

 

In the end I've had to cancel the whole order. Need to wait 24 hours and then put in another order on the phone, instead of online, so they don't fuck it up again.

 

How hard is it!?

Good god, the stories I could tell about Chorus, the single company that's been charged with installing Fibre to the entirety of NZ (because how could that possibly go wrong?)

 

I wish you luck in your dealings with them, it's always a battle.

We've got a few people who have started to get the satellite installations in the districts around Nhill. Sounds like it's more reliable than their old connections, but the download limits can be still quite small.

any more news on the wireless NBN shrives in terms of speed and suitability to gaming?

I think Shrive is referring to actual Satellite connections, not the fixed wireless NBN.

 

I know someone who got fixed wireless NBN a year or so ago and they were getting 50Mbps down. Not sure on the up speed. Can't remember the latency though which is probably the most important. I imagine the latency would be quite high. 70+

 

I've also seen other people online getting 15Mbps down.

 

I guess it depends on the area and congestion.
