quick question regarding nbn wifi

in the new house due to size the wifi is crap and only gets about 1/2 way accross the house.

i have a netgear 6300 and think i might be able to set this up as a wifi repeater in the middle of the house to extend it.

anyone have any experience with doing something like this. or wifi extenders

was trying to avoid spending another 6-700 on a top line modem

Ubiquiti to the rescue!

https://www.ubnt.com/products/#unifi Specifically AC LR (Long Range) or PRO.

Personally, extenders are the last option since they're half duplex.

i was actually having a look at these ones over the weekend but couldnt figure out the amount of coverage they give or if i would need multiple ones

they would sync with my other ubiquiti switch and gateway easy enough (if i can ever get the gateway to work... more on that latter)

have you used these yourself phobos?

+1 for Ubiquiti.

Get a couple and spread them out throughout your house. Ceiling mount them if possible.

Disable the WiFi on your router.

whats wrong with tpg connections?

ive been with them for over a decade and find them fantastic

currently getting over 96/38 on my nbn line

Cheap and nasty, they are fine for local stuff (mostly) but there international routing is rubbish.

My pings time on internode have gone up 10-40ms to US/EU destinations since its now going out via TPG links.

Prime example is Dubai.. I used to get sub 180ms to Valves Dubai servers, now its over 400ms since return path gets lugged to TPG's HE US transit link instead of coming back via Asia.. TPG's network quality is rubbish.

so picked up a uap-ac-lr and will mount in the middle of the house so will be interesting to see how this goes. if i can get a 15m radius from it then that will be mre then ample

we have the whole house hard wired so dont need alot of wifi other than mobiles and all the smart devices we put in.

ill let everyone know how it goes.

I actually had worse routing with NBN in general, internationally I used to get around 180ms to west coast US, 240 ish to east coast while I was on copper, went up to around 250-300 when I went to NBN, on both internode and telstra.

Nice. Let us know how it goes. If anything, they hold their value on eBay if you change your mind.

I use the same, AC LR on medium strength. Internal brick walls would be interesting to test but all access points would suffer.

Not really surprising.. Depending on what POI you are on and connection type, local latency can be higher than DSL on low latency profile.. I'm a friends place atm on FTTP, and pings exactly same as I get at home on DSL. Sunbury POI gets hauled to Bendigo for some reason...

I think you might have misread that title - the cost is rising by another 2 billion. ie, it's gone from 49 billion to 51 billion. I really wish they'd just done it right in the first place :(

So my NBN saga...

Nhill was slated to be connected to the NBN originally around April this year, which got pushed back to June. Wasn't the end of the world, as they upped our build to FTTC (so there was at least a partial advantage to being last).

Anyway, June rolled around and NBN website said Nhill was connected. The ISPs were telling me I was good to go... until they put my address in. Apparently my block of flats had been put in the too hard basket. Instead, they told me I wouldn't be able to get the NBN until February next year. Great.

But then two weeks ago I suddenly got a heap of emails from iiNet saying the NBN was good to go and they were sending my out my NBN Connection Device and a modem. This was a pleasant surprise.

Last Wednesday at 5pm my ADSL stopped working, without notice. I rang them and they told me they had switched off the ADSL so I could plug in my NBN equipment. I said that's all good and well, but the NBN stuff had not yet arrived. For some reason they thought it was going to get from Sydney on Tuesday all the way to Nhill on Wednesday.

Anyway, the equipment arrives on Thursday. I try to connect it all up, but the correct lights aren't coming on. They make me do all the usual stuff, including a factory reset, and they told me to ring back in an hour if it hadn't started working. So I ring back in an hour, and they then tell me the faults section has closed for the night but they'll inquire with the faults people in the morning and ring me once it's working.

I'm away all of Friday. I have a missed call about 3pm saying that my NBN is now working (as they apparently hadn't provisioned it from their end, but now all is good). However, after that missed call I then have another eight missed calls from iiNet during the rest of the afternoon. This does not fill me with confidence.

Sure enough, I get home in the late hours of Friday night/early Saturday morning to find the NBN Connection Device is still blinking and there is no connection.

I finally had time to ring them today, and after telling the guy I've already reset everything, tried different cables, don't have a splitter installed, etc. etc. he agreed there was obviously a problem and lodged a fault. Now I have to wait another 24 hours for them to do something.

The long and the short of it is I am still without internet. Another friend of mine had to wait two weeks for his ISP to send out an NBN technician and another connection device, so that is my worst fear at this point. Fingers crossed it is something they can fix from their end, but I suspect they're going to have to send out someone to look at the cabling around this place. I'm sure this would not be an issue if they had just done FTTP...

I'm surprised we don't have a F*** You option in the "like" button... Just for Decroxx's posts...

I will say that my NBN had been great since I got away from Internode. Other than the odd random disconnect... which takes a minute or so to come back and then continues as if nothing is wrong.

So anyway, they've told me a technician will contact me tomorrow and they will be out here before the end of the week. In no way, shape or form do I believe that.

So the saga continues.

On Monday I rang iiNet again to see if any progress had been made on the fault which was lodged. Turns out, there wasn't a fault lodged. The person on the other end started to get me to do the resets etc. again and I explained how many times we had already been through that. They agreed there was obviously a problem and this time actually lodged the fault. They said NBN Co would contact me either that evening or by Tuesday morning to make an appointment with a technician. I was also told that my NBN connection would be up and running by the end of the week (which, while annoying, was something I could deal with). This seemed like progress...

Until Tuesday afternoon rolled around and I still had not heard from anyone. I rang iiNet again around 1pm and they said NBN Co should still ring me that day. If I hadn't heard from them by close of business then I should ring back. So sure enough, 5pm comes around, I haven't heard from them at all, and thus I ring iiNet again. They then tell me it could take up to 48 hours for them to make contact, but that NBN Co should ring by Wednesday afternoon. The guy on the other end started to tell me that I could get my ADSL reconnected if necessary, which I was more than happy to do... until he stopped mid sentence when he realised that wasn't possible (which I already knew). He told me that once NBN Co stopped the ADSL connection then there was no way to reactivate it.

Wednesday rolls around and it gets to 4:30pm and I still have not heard from NBN Co nor iiNet. So I give the ISP a call once again. The lady on the other end was sympathetic and said they were still waiting on NBN Co to make an appointment with a technician. She told me she would ring by midday today with an update. I was getting very skeptical at this point and after speaking with iiNet I then rang Aussie Broadband to see if they could help. The guy on the other end was excellent and said that if there is a fault they wouldn't be able to expediate the process but they would keep me very reliably informed if I made the switch to them. I told him I was strongly considering it, but would hold off for now.

Of course, today comes around, midday passes, and I haven't heard a thing from anyone. So this afternoon I decided to take matters into my own hands and find the number for NBN Co complaints. I give them a call, and while on hold, all of their messages are saying "if you have any connection issues, wish to report a fault, or require a technician, please ring your ISP". But I figure I'll say on the line and try my luck. When I finally get through I explain to the bloke on the other end of the line what has happened. He says he's willing to look into it for me, but also clarifies that it wasn't them who cut the ADSL but Telstra (at iiNet's request). After another moment on hold he returns to say that iiNet have not actioned the connection and therefore it is not active. He says there is no request in the system for a technician and that I should ring iiNet and get them to ring the Network Operation Centre to sort it out. This seemed helpful.

However, when I ring iiNet armed with this new information and tell them what NBN Co told me, the iiNet chap says NBN Co do that all the time just to get people off the line! He assures me a technician has been requested, but that NBN Co still have not given them an update. He also assures me he'll ring back when he knows more...

Do you have a dial tone? Dialup should still work...

Haha! Pricks have probably cut that too.

It seems silly to me that they can't just switch the ADSL back on. It's not like some guy came out to the pit to change a cable over (to the best of my knowledge anyway).

I had issues with iinet when I first got my cable connected. The technician couldn't' come out on the scheduled date due to scheduling error that was a month after I had moved and initially contacted them. I was then required to contact them to rescheduled and they gave me a date a further 2 months from that. I then cracked it and got angry and I had a technician at my house 10am the next day. Don't know how that happened. But iinet arn't the best with connection.
