MasterShrive 2,018 Report post Posted October 11, 2016 Nath is on wireless NBN. It goes pretty well for him I think. Satellite is what people get around outside of Nhill. I don't know of anyone who games on it, but I might get someone to run a speedtest to see the ping. At some point I think we're getting FTTN, but who knows when that might be. 1 Go to top Share this post Link to post

FTTN is looking like what we are getting too, not liking the way they are going about it, every time they touch the copper it stuffs up more of it and costs us more. They are putting some equipment in the telstra pits, I can see this being an issue for reliability and serviceability. Go to top Share this post Link to post
RallyMan 304 Report post Posted October 11, 2016 Nath is on wireless NBN. It goes pretty well for him I think. ill have to have a chat with him about it at Pax just been offered a pretty big role in tamworth of all places so been looking at land to build on and trying to sort out what the pros and cons are. only option for internet seems to be the wireless NBN so was curious how it went for gaming ect (not that i would have much choice). i got the impression from the speeds that its just a slightly faster version of adsl 2 (up to 25Mbps) 1 Go to top Share this post Link to post
Duckz 474 Report post Posted November 7, 2016 Shouldn't be too long before FTTN is available here. Just set up my latest purchase; TP-Link Archer VR600 Modem/Router. Doesn't have built in VOIP, but even though I'll transfer my number over, I don't plan on connecting a phone, because I only get fuckwits calling wanted to change my electricity or some other randoms that I can't understand. Thoroughly enjoying the benefits of AC WiFi on the 5GHZ band though. First device I've had which broadcasts as such. 1 Go to top Share this post Link to post
MasterShrive 2,018 Report post Posted April 26, 2018 After a hell of a lot of waiting, Nhill is hopefully about to get the NBN switched on. They've been digging and flushing pipes the last couple of months and a guy was sitting out the front of my flat in a van the other day hooking into the wires, so hopefully that means progress (and not the FBI). Nhill is getting FTTC, so hopefully it won't be too bad. But I have two questions: what provider have people gone with who are already on the NBN? And what router are you using? I'd like to be prepared so I can get it switched on as soon as possible. You still using the above @Duckz? Go to top Share this post Link to post
Duckz 474 Report post Posted April 27, 2018 I was with Internode for a few months before I moved back home, then I switched to iiNet because they were able to port the landline number here, where for some reason Internode weren't able to. I've been very happy with both providers. I've also heard good things about Australian Broadband. In terms of hardware, I was happy with the VR600 while I was using it, but since switching to iiNet, and needing VoiP functionality, I've just been using the provided TG-789 modem from iiNet, which I haven't had a problem with either. If you want to use your own modem/router, do the research to find out if it's actually compatible with the NBN. If you start using incompatible hardware, you'll get all sorts of issues with your ISP and your port being blocked etc. Might even be easier to use the provided modem/router, set it in bridge mode, then use your own router if that's what your really want to. bprc 1,441 Report post Posted April 27, 2018 Some ISP's won't allow you to use your own router AND VoIP as the details are hardcoded in to their own routers and they don't share them. Looking at you Telstra. Some other ISP's might do the same. I'm using my Gateway Max (TG799VAC I think) in Bridge mode to my pfsense box. 1 Go to top Share this post Link to post
MiniSanders 588 Report post Posted April 27, 2018 I'm with Aussie Broadband, and have had awesome connection since I went over to them. I have FTTN, and I'm on the 50/20 plan and I'm getting 45 to 48 most of the time. I was with Internode before that and was getting speed drops from 45ish during the day down to 10ish... but my ping also went from 7ms out to 300ms.... so most games became unplayable. If you do go with ABB I have a friendly referral code if you are feeling nice... for every friend I refer I get a free month I'm also using the modem I got from Internode when I was with them, has been up and down lately, seems to randomly drop connections every now and then and has to reboot to get it back. Not sure what is causing it though. Go to top Share this post Link to post
MasterShrive 2,018 Report post Posted April 27, 2018 I'm with iiNet at present and they've never done me wrong. I was thinking of sticking with them for the NBN, to at least make the initial rollover maybe a little bit smoother. But Aussie Broadband is high on my list and if I look to change I'll hit you up for that code Mini. All handy information to know. Go to top Share this post Link to post
Duckz 474 Report post Posted April 27, 2018 Anyone else started receiving emails regarding a refund from your ISP due to slow speeds and ACCC actions? We received one for the plan/premise I'm currently at, and I also received an email from Internode for the period of about 2 months while I was connected with them at the start of last year, saying I'm entitled to a refund too. Go to top Share this post Link to post
bprc 1,441 Report post Posted April 27, 2018 Yeah, I went through that a while back @Duckz. Telstra were one of the first ISP's to be put through the ringer. You have a few options. From memory, they are; do nothing (stay on your contract with no refund), accept your refund based on the actual speeds you can achieve and change plans or take the refund and cancel your contract. It would be worth doing this if you were getting way less than your plan speeds but my maximum download speed was about 2mbps below my plan (100) and the upload was right on 40. My refund amount was crap and not worth changing my plan or breaking contract. In short, if you're not getting anywhere near your plan speeds, take the refund and drop to a lower plan. Definitely take the Internode refund though Go to top Share this post Link to post
Noods 290 Report post Posted April 28, 2018 (edited) Well this is a timely discussion! Ive just moved and now on the NBN bye bye my beautiful cable. I was with iiNet on the cable and stuck with them for the NBN but Iv'e only been connected for like 2 days. We are fttp and Im on the NBN 50. So far speeds have been about 44 and 15. I got the TG-789 as well. I usually just use the one provided and don't no too much about the modems but at the moment have it in the garage and the Wi Fi range doesn't seem that great. Anyone know much about homes that are smart wired? seems like I can connect a phone line from the NBN box to a socket then there is a socket in the kitchen where I could connect another phone line to the modem. Are phone lines going to slow the connection down over say Ethernet? Why wouldnt they make it Ethernet sockets? Also don't fall into the trap that I did and think that iiNet's plans come with a Netflix and Stan Subscription like Telstra's. They put all the bloody logos up beside the Fetch TV but it only says you can stream these if u have the subscriptions already in the fine print. Could be worth looking at Telstra for 99 you can get Foxtel Now, Netflix and Stan Subscriptions included if that's your thing. Edited April 28, 2018 by Noods Go to top Share this post Link to post
bprc 1,441 Report post Posted April 28, 2018 I don't think any of the ISP's offer free Netflix subscriptions. Maybe it's a 3 or 6 month trial? What do you mean "smart wired"? Do you have any RJ45 (8 pin) sockets in the house? Go to top Share this post Link to post
Noods 290 Report post Posted April 28, 2018 (edited) hmmm cant find it now but I was on the phone to them and looking on my phone they said it was included. Knowing the Dodgy bastards it prob was a trial. Definitely included base Fox Now subscription though Yeah think they are RJ45 sockets. One in the Garage next to NBN box then one in the kitchen and one in Master BR. Im assuming its for running the phone from the modem to the House? Edited April 28, 2018 by Noods Go to top Share this post Link to post
bprc 1,441 Report post Posted April 28, 2018 If it's RJ45 you can just plug a WAP in to it anyway. That'll at least give you better wireless coverage throughout the house. Does that mean your PC isn't hardwired and running off wireless? Go to top Share this post Link to post
Noods 290 Report post Posted April 28, 2018 Nah 30 meter ethernet cable from the garage to the office is taking care of that! Not sure how the wife feels about a blue cable running along the floor of the kitchen and across the hallway though lol!! How do I WAP? Go to top Share this post Link to post
RallyMan 304 Report post Posted May 2, 2018 moving into our new house tomorrow and the NBN just got transfered today so will be interesting to see how this goes compared to where i am now. managed to get nbn co to bring the fibre directly into my server rack in the garage so happy with that not sure when ill have everything set up with the move as there is a fair bit to go into the rack but hopefully over the weekend sometime been with TPG for a while now and never had a problem with them. i think regardless of supplier if you have a good thing where you are and the cost is right why change noods just plug the phone into the kitchen outlet and the other end into the phone port on the nbn box and it should work without the cable on the floor Go to top Share this post Link to post

MasterShrive 2,018 Report post Posted May 2, 2018 Nice work with getting the fibre to the server. Dare I ask what you had to do to make that happen? Go to top Share this post Link to post
MiniSanders 588 Report post Posted May 2, 2018 I have just bought a new modem. My current modem is randomly dropping out, random times of the day. Even first thing in the morning it just isn't working... Seems to lose DSL sync but a restart of the modem fixes it. Hopefully the new modem gets me a similar speed and sync rate. Haven't gone anything too expensive, just a NetComm NF18ACV. It was one of the supplied modems from my ISP (ABB) and seemed to have decent reviews for the sub $200 modem range. I'm hoping it fixes my dropout issues. Go to top Share this post Link to post

Most FTTP installs are done to the garage in new houses. as BP said the wall mount server server is in the garage. we ran the conduit from where the nbn box would be outside to the cabinet directly so they had no choice but to run it there. ill have to post some pics up when i get a chance 1 Go to top Share this post Link to post
MasterShrive 2,018 Report post Posted May 2, 2018 Yeah I'm just surprised there was any communication, lol. But I guess given we're getting FTTC they don't need to talk to anyone on the inside. Go to top Share this post Link to post
