One draw back so far is that it doesn't have a hdmi port in it like my mates qnap so I'm going to have to run it through a media player of some sort

Jib - can you connect the synology directly with network cable and stream directly (in a format the output, say TV)?

 

I still have not pulled the trigger on this but I was 100% synology, but now thinking QNAP because of this (ideally I would like to use the NAS as storage / music streaming / media PC

I came back from the land of NZ only to find that my NAS was dead. It refuses to power on at all. I've tried a different power outlet (it was originally on a surge protector), but it looks like it's dead. Anyone had any experience with something like this? I'm not quite sure where to proceed from here. It's four and a half years old and never caused any issues, but I was hoping to get a lot more time out of it yet. I've contacted support, but I'm not hopeful.

Synology Hybrid Raid from memory. Probably wait and see what support have to say, but I concur, you're probably butt hurt.

 

Why NAS' should be treated as a storage device, and not a backup device. And why I have 5x4TB externals tucked away at the top of a cupboard inside a Pelican case.

 

In the future, I'd highly recommend sitting the NAS unit on a UPS too.

They were in a RAID - synology hybrid (which allows different sized disks). 4 disks, 1 disk redundancy. I'd consider it quite unlucky if they were dead. I've also read that transferring those disks into a new Synology system should be relatively straight forward. So if it's as dead as I suspect then a new unit might be on the cards.

Which is just linux software raid, shouldn't be to hard to rebuild array under nix distro or use testdisk or similiar for data recovery..

Support got back to me and it might just be the power brick. It's meant to have an LED light on it, but that is no longer working, so hopefully that just indicates it's the brick and not the entire unit. Time will tell when my new power adapter arrives next week.
